At Mackereth's Hedon Farm a selection of locally produced fine wines are available for sale by the glass, bottle or case. These wines for sale have been carefully and specifically chosen from the Pyrenees Region and provide a wonderful example of the areas' produce.
Recognised as the Pyrenees first winery, the old house was built c.1865 by Edwin H. Mackereth who came in search of gold and subsequently bought 40 acres in Avoca. Vines were planted in the 1880's and he supplied wine to a number of hotels in town. Todays vines were planted in 1999 by Mt Avoca Winery and the variety is Tempranillo.
Restoration of the 'little house' (there is also a main house) started five years ago and since completion the house has been enjoyed as a venue for car rallies, wine promotion and weekend stays.
Accommodation includes two bedrooms (queen beds / ceiling fans), new bathroom (one toilet), living room (wood fire / DVD available) and dining area. Original kitchen - no oven - includes microwave oven and hotplates. Outside next to the vines are wood-fire plus gas barbecue and open-fire pit.
So pretty in autumn and spring, sensational at night. Only two kilometres from High Street, Hedon. Farm offers a wine experience which can be enhanced by an overnight stay in a cottage (with good continental breakfast) which is steeped in local history.
